Bio

Dr. Ning Xiang earned his Ph. D. in 1990 from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum (RUB) in Bochum, Germany (with advisor Prof. Dr. Jens Blauert). Dr. Xiang was then employed as a project manager and R&D engineer for Head Acoustics Inc., Germany, from 1991-1996 and subsequently joined the Fraunhofer-Institute for Building Physics, Stuttgart, Germany, as a Research Scientist in 1997. From 1998 – 2003, he was with the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) in Oxford, Mississippi. He was a Research Scientist of the National Center for Physical Acoustics and a Research Associate Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Mississippi. Since 2003, he has been at the School of Architecture, and department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

For over 20 years, Dr. Xiang has been a consistently invited lecturer by the International Congress on Acoustics (ICA), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the British Institute of Acoustics (IoA), the Audio Engineering Society, the Acoustical Society of East Germany, and the Acoustical Society of Poland.  Dr. Xiang is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA), and also an Associate Editor of the Express Letters in JASA, Editor-in-Chief of a book series with J. Ross Publishing. He has published over 200 papers in proceedings and peer-reviewed journals (including “J. of the Acoustical Society of America”, “IEEE”, “Applied Acoustics and Acustica”) in the following research fields: ultrasonic measurement technology, Bayesian inference, acoustic techniques for landmine detection, model-based data analysis, automatic target recognition, architectural acoustics, binaural auralization and binaural scale-model measurements, auditory virtual reality and binaural signal processing.

Dr. Xiang has also been serving active roles at international scientific societies and organizations. He was an advisory board member of two International Symposia on Room-Acoustics, in Seville, Spain, 2007, and Melbourne, Australia, 2010, a member of the organization committee of the 27th International Workshop on Bayesian Inference and Maximum Entropy Methods in Science and Engineering and an advisory board member of the 37th International Congresses on Noise Control Engineering, Shanghai, China. He is now serving a Member of Organization Committee of the Acoustics Conference 2012 in Hong Kong, China. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (United Kingdom), and a Member of the German Acoustical Society since 1991, a Member of the Audio Engineering Society, a Member of IEEE Signal Processing Society, and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society.
