MOBILE GENERATION
Super Private Pao and the Unscripted Community

NILS JONSSON

Set at an indeterminate time in New York City’s future, my thesis is an exploration into the effects that technology, distrust of government, and urban growth have on a city surrounded by water.

Drawing on my own fascination with technological progress and politics to mix with the studio’s focus on urban metabolism, my project has evolved into a sort of sci-fi vision of a potential future, grounded in my initial research into the cultural and economic climate of the city.

I take a look at an extreme government response to an ecological crisis, and the independent architectural reactions of the citizens.  By using a model of thinking and doing based on the recent Occupy Wall Street movement, I begin to predict a new type of society that arises out of the conflict between a government and the people.

My thesis has also been a personal exploration into my own technophilia, and what it is like to be part of a generation that is increasingly connected through such outlets as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, while also becoming internally more fragmented as a result of juggling multiple personalities to fit each facet of our increasingly digital lives.
