Michael Stradley: “Heroic Silence”

[Brown’s Presentation]

Thesis student, Michael Stradley presents HEROIC SILENCE as his study of Swiss architecture, design, and design culture. This presentation covers his travels to Switzerland as part of the Brown’s Travel Fellowship that he was awarded in 2012.

Heroic Silence is a reading of Swiss design culture developed throughout a
month of travelling across the country. Over the last 150 years, Swiss
design culture has emerged as one of the world’s most mature, regularly
producing great works and great authors that thoughtfully engage the
elemental concerns of design, material, and craft. Characterized by a high
level of discipline, restraint, and obsessive involvement with construction
processes, Swiss architects and designers have consistently found ways to
participate in national and regional culture without compromising the
intellectual integrity of the work or its contribution to the larger
discipline of architecture.

A series of six paintings accompany the presentation, executed in response
to the travelling research. The works engage the Swiss tradition of
landscape painting and examine the relationship between natural environment
and inhabitation. Combining hi-tech fabrication with hand-craft, these 2.5-
D works are the progeny of landscape, architecture, and painting.
