In “Style: Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts”, Gottfried Semper the nineteenth-century German architect and historian demonstrates that architecture has always maintained an explicit relationship to textiles and even the most rigid architectural surfaces have origins in more pliable textile development. The rapid evolution and increasing accessibility of robotic fabrication in architecture has opened up the role of surface in architecture to a whole new gamut of possible affects and performances for engaging society. As a contemporary projection of this framework, Robotic Lattice Smock (RLS) transposes the affects of lattice smocking to folding and bending of planar sheet metal through computational simulation and robotic fabrication processes. RLS is a project designed for the 2013 Browns Fellowship by Andrew Saunders in collaboration with London-based fabrication house Robofold.
