In one of his final books, The Three Ecologies, philosopher and psychoanalyst Felix Guattari prophetically described the mental, social and environmental instability of the early twenty-first century. As a response to these precarious sets of conditions, he put forth a theory of action in which a dynamic network of individuals and collectives would begin to structure new forms of communication. These dynamic exchanges of knowledge could in turn allow us to actively address the social, environmental and mental challenges of our time.

In this semester we will focus our attention towards the architectural typology of the pavilion. Often ambiguous in nature, pavilions can challenge conventional notions of stability and normality, instead, presenting architecture as a dynamic frame, which initiates, provokes, and encourages new modes of living. We will begin the project by engaging in a series of abstract explorations of form and space; each instructor will provide a unique framework for their students to engage this process. Over the course of the semester, these initial explorations will be transformed, ultimately leading to a unique idea of a pavilion; to be situated in the city of Troy. Research, readings and field trips will also play a critical role in the development of the project. Through relationships of material, structure, program and site, new spaces will emerge. These new spatial types will give us insight into how architecture can begin to address Guattari’s definitions of ecology.
