Chamartín Railroad Station - Madrid, Spain

The principal project for the Architectural Design 3 studio, which is the second semester of the second year, was the design of a new railroad station for Chamartín district of Madrid, Spain. This station included not only facilities to accommodate the needs of a large railroad station that services inbound and outbound trains and passengers from all points north of the city but also included the schematic design of a large hotel, commercial facilities, and parking. Because this station is located in a very rapidly growing segment of north Madrid, its design had to consider a variety of urban conditions impacting this area. In particular, students had to include as part of their design a proposal for the development of an urban park to the south of the station complex. During spring break, approximately one third of the students in the studio took a field trip to Spain to visit the site for this project as well as visit numerous buildings in Spain of historical and contemporary significance.
