‘Affect Diagramming’ as spatial analysis – Each student began with an interpretive analysis of unique painting and sculptural works from the Hyde Collection itself. Since each piece under analysis had a series of signature elements and characteristics, the process of ‘affect diagramming’ was an attempt to extract or highlight these principal characteristics and a set of spatial, experiential, or organizational ideas inherent to the original works of art.

‘Transposition’ & design methodology – Each artist’s description of light, atmosphere and texture inspired unique strategies for illuminating a series of gallery spaces and for providing dynamic access to the Collection. Each artist’s unique depiction of texture, perspectival space, and the passage of time suggested inventive approaches to curating the wide variety of pieces in the Hyde Collection itself. Since the museum includes extensive landscape and several existing structures, students focused upon developing a sophisticated approach to collecting and organizing the various works and spatial experiences on site.

Having derived a specific understanding of ‘affect’ during an individual analysis, each idea set was then tested against in an architectural context through a process of transposition. In the design studio context, ‘transposition’ was defined as “the movement or translation of design ideas from one artistic medium to another,” as ideas became increasingly applied in three- and four-dimensional work. Schematic projects proposed a curatorial strategy (interior dynamics,) and the shaping of illumination (exterior dynamics).

Forming a new identity – Each project attempted to organize more coherent relationships among disparate parts of the Hyde complex, and to synthesize a dynamic identity for the Collection. Given today’s dynamic cultural context, catalyzing a versatile, multi-faceted approach to curation, display and day lighting became central to each proposal. By proposing new curatorial dynamics for the museum, each project establishes new connections within the existing complex, creating multiple new interpretations of the Hyde Collection itself.
