ROSE OCEAN: LIVING WITH DUCHAMP,
Grand Opening

Marcel Duchamp is arguably the most influential artist of the 20th century. For the past decade, SoA professor Michael Oatman has taught a 2-credit course entitled ‘Duchamp Seminar: Anarchism Umped.’ Described as “a history/theory course where we make things,” the curriculum includes lectures, writings, field trips to museums and projects where we make Duchamp forgeries and work critically in the manner of this important modernist.

On the 10th anniversary of the course, Tang Museum Director Ian Berry invited Oatman and his students to design the 2018 exhibition, “ROSE OCEAN: Living With Duchamp.” Eleven students in the spring 2017 semester (Kristen Anderson, Sarah Bertis, Taylor Carlin, Varun Chillara, Abbey Dolan, Matthew DeMio, Joshua Gyamfi, Chris Muscari, Sara Paclat, Abbey Ray, Deanna Valcour), and 12 students in the fall 2017 semester (Matthew DeMio, Jerry Huang, Connor King, Jessica Krajewski, Jenna Kulek, Vivian Lin, Ashley Membreno, Zachary Pearson, Nicholas Pretel, Emily Sun, Erica Vinson, Elaine Zhang), all contributed to the final design.

Working in dialogue with the Tang Museum curatorial team and installation staff, a year of collaborative work has resulted in an exhibition with 50+ artists including two new works by Williams College professor Amy Podmore, and SoA student Zachary Pearson. Opens February 17 at 5 PM and runs through May 20. We look forward to seeing the SoA community at the grand opening!
