RECENT LECTURE: CATHERINE INGRAHAM

Wed Feb 26, 6PM @ EMPAC

“Plasticity: Architecture and New Natures”.

Catherine Ingraham is Professor of Architecture in the graduate architecture program at Pratt Institute in New York City, where she formerly served as Chair of Architecture from 1999-2005. Ingraham’s contributions to architectural culture are perhaps best summarized as an expansion beyond traditional disciplinary domains consequently helping redefine architectural discourse.

As one of the most significant forces of American architecture theory, from 1991-98 she served as editor, with Michael Hays and Alicia Kennedy, of the highly constructive Assemblage publication, an architectural theory journal published by MIT Press from 1986 to 2000. Widely considered the most relevant journal on contemporary architectural theory during its time, Assemblage’s additional former editors included Stan Allen, Sarah Whiting, Mark Rakatansky, Ellen Shapiro, and Mary McLeod.

Author of myriad articles on architectural culture, theory, and history published in academic journals, collections and other publications, as well as author of numerous books including Architecture, Animal, Human: The Asymmetrical Condition (Routledge 2006), Architecture and the Burdens of Linearity (Yale University Press 1998), and was co-editor of Restructuring Architectural Theory (Northwestern University Press 1986).

Ingraham has served as Visiting Professor at Graduate School of Design, Harvard University 1991 and 1993; Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University 1989 and 1990; as well as at Princeton University School of Architecture; and the University of Illinois at Chicago
