DANG QUN (MAD Architects):
“The Spirit of Shanshui City”

Rensselaer School of Architecture concludes its Spring 2022 Lecture Series on Monday, April 4th at 6:30pm EDT with the online lecture “The Spirit of Shanshui Cityby architect Dang Qun of MAD Architects.

MAD Architects is a Beijing-based design firm that specializes in a broad range of work, including urban complexes, municipal planning, theaters, museums, and housing. With a global portfolio of projects, MAD has made tremendous strides towards developing futuristic and technologically advanced designs that present a contemporary exposition on the Eastern affinity for nature. This is reflected in their vision for Shanshui City.

The MAD design philosophy, “Shanshui City”, is grounded in the concept of creating cities that respond to the emotional and spiritual needs of its residents. Drawing from nature, earth and the sky for inspiration, the shan (mountain) shui (water) practice is about inventing a new topography for modern high rise architecture.

Their other work includes the Ordos Museum, Harbin Opera House, and the iconic Absolute Towers in Mississauga, Canada. The firm has received several accolades highlighting their exemplary work, including several ArchDaily Building of the Year awards, Dezeen’s 2020 Architect of the Year, and being named one of the top 40 most famous architects of the 21st century by Archute.

Dang Qun is a Principal Partner at MAD Architects. She has taught at multiple acclaimed institutions, including Pratt Institute and Iowa State University, and has received a Certificate of Merit from the American Institute of Architects.
