TOSIN OSHINOWO:
“A CONTEXTUAL MODERNITY: AN AFRO-MINIMALIST APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURE”_

Rensselaer School of Architecture concludes its Fall 2022 Lecture Series on Monday November 14th, 6:00 pm, at EMPAC with the lecture “ Contextual Modernity: An Afro-Minimalist approach to Architecture” by Nigerian architect and curator Tosin Oshinowo.

Lagos-based Tosin Oshinowo is known for working on sensitive, context-responsive projects that seek to address ecological, and social issues. She is the founder and director of cmDesign Atelier. Renowned for its human-focused approach to design, the collaborative practice has an impressive portfolio that stretches commercial, civic, and residential architecture. Among its recent projects is the redesign of Ngarannam—a Northern Nigerian community that was displaced by Boko Haram—in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program and the Nigerian government.

Tosin Oshinowo has recently been appointed as the curator for the 2023 Sharjah Architecture Triennial, on the commitment to continue forging dialogues about architecture and urbanism in the Global South around the theme ‘The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability’.

Before opening her own practice, she had worked for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in London, the Office of Metropolitan Architecture in Rotterdam, and James Corbitt in Lagos. She also established Ile Ila, a contemporary Nigerian furniture line, that uses West African upholstery and hardwoods on the celebration of Yoruba culture.

Tosin Oshinowo received an architectural degree from Kingston College and Master in Urban Design from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London.
